微妙な心理も、次のような実験で解明できます。初めにお話しした自己知覚に関係するのですが、今度はとてもつまらない仕事を1時間やってもらいます。二つのグループに分け、バイト代として一方には2,000円、もう一方には100円を支払う約束にします。お互い、相手のグループがいくらもらうかは知りません。そして終了後にアンケートを取り、仕事の面白さに点数を付けてもらうのですが、とても興味深い結果が出ました。たくさんもらった方が気分もよさそうなのに、より高い点数を付けたのは時給100円のグループでした。どうしてか。つまらない仕事に耐えているのに、報酬が100円ではお金が目的とはとてもいえない。なのに、自分はこの仕事をやってしまっている。矛盾するわけです。そこでこの人たちは、面白いからやっていると思うようになるのです。お金のためじゃないんだ、ピュアな気持ちなんだと。これは脳と環境が一致しないような状態で、まことに気分が悪い。だから、バイト代が100円という事実が変えられない以上、心の側を合わせるしかないのです。こうした状態を「認知的不協和」といいますが、世間でも当てはまる例が結構多い。例えばプロ野球やサッカーのJリーグでも、年俸が安い球団の選手ほど、チームへの忠誠心が強いように思うのですがどうでしょうか。
